Widow empowerment in Nigeria is transforming lives every day through the work of the Azemobor Gregory Foundation. Recently, Mrs. Fumilayo Afuye, a 65-year-old widow, received a ₦50,000 cash grant to support her petty trading business in Lagos.
The Struggles Behind Azemobor Foundation Widow Empowerment
Mrs. Fumilayo’s journey has been far from easy.
After the death of her husband, she was forcefully sent out of her home by his family. Since then, she has struggled with homelessness, moving from one friend’s place to another while trying to survive.
To make ends meet, she sells used fabrics (okrika) at Ketu bus stop. However, the income is unstable and barely enough to meet her daily needs.
In her quiet moments, she reflects on the life she once had and the painful reality she now faces. Like many widows, grief changed everything—her home, her stability, and her sense of security.
How Azemobor Foundation Widow Empowerment Restored Hope
Through the Azemobor Foundation’s widow empowerment program, Mrs. Fumilayo received financial support to strengthen her small business.
With this ₦50,000 grant:
- She can restock her goods
- Improve her daily sales
- Begin to rebuild her independence
More importantly, she received encouragement and support from the foundation team, reminding her that she is not alone.
