Supporting widows in Nigeria is essential to building stronger communities. In Irewe, a riverside area in Lagos, lives Mrs. Aminat Ayodele, a 41-year-old widow raising her three youngest children after losing her husband four years ago. Out of her six children, the older three live with relatives due to financial constraints.
Despite immense challenges, Mrs. Ayodele refuses to give in to despair. Her determination to provide for her family is inspiring and reflects the resilience of countless widows across Nigeria.

A Woman Who Refuses to Give Up
Before her husband’s passing, Mrs. Ayodele earned income by processing and selling garri (cassava flakes). Without financial support, she could no longer continue that trade.
Today, she sustains her family through multiple small ventures:
- Gathering crabs, periwinkles, and other seafood from the riverside
- Weaving mats and selling them locally
- Trading coconuts—buying in bulk locally and selling at higher prices on the mainland
Her perseverance is a testament to her strength and resourcefulness.
AGF’s Timely Support
Her story caught the attention of the Azemobor Gregory Foundation (AGF) fully funded by Bethel Mendes. During a recent outreach, the AGF Charity City Project Team visited her community to provide support.
Mrs. Ayodele was presented with a ₦15,000 cash grant to restart her small business—a small amount with the power to transform her livelihood.

A Path Toward Stability
With this support, Mrs. Ayodele plans to:
- Buy coconuts in larger quantities
- Sell at higher margins
- Reinvest profits to grow her business
The International Coordinator of AGF encouraged her to use the funds wisely, helping ensure that this support creates sustainable income for her family.
Why Supporting Widows in Nigeria Matters
Mrs. Ayodele’s story is one of many. Across Nigeria, widows and indigent mothers struggle daily, working tirelessly with little support. Through its programs, AGF provides:
- Small grants to create lasting impact
- Empowerment opportunities for widows and vulnerable mothers
- Tools to rebuild livelihoods with dignity
